Bio

Kevin W. McKinney is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator originally from the Cleveland area. Kevin earned a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in Jazz & Improvised Music from the University of Nevada, Reno. Kevin performs regularly on various instruments in a wide range of musical settings including jazz, hip hop, classical, freely improvised music and others. Kevin has maintained a private teaching studio for over fifteen years. Kevin plays a Yamaha Custom Z alto saxophone with an Aaron Drake Contemporary Alto 7 mouthpiece, a Rovner Versa ligature, and Francois Louis Excellence reeds, size 2.5

 

While saxophone is Kevin's main performing instrument, he began studying piano at age 4.  Over the past decade Kevin has played piano/keyboards with many different performing groups, worked as an accompanist with vocalists/performing arts groups, led parish bands and music teams, written and performed various solo piano works, written and arranged pieces for groups across the country, and led a working piano trio in the Ann Arbor area.  Kevin considers the piano to be an integral part of his musical journey.

Kevin recently ended his tenure as the Director of Music Education at Go Like The Wind Montessori in Whitmore Lake, Michigan to care for his newborn twins, Owen and Giorgia.
